Diwali in the nursery
The nursery children had a very busy and happy Diwali day. After learning about the story behind the Festival of Lights the children helped make some Indian food. First we made sweets by adding dates, almond, coconut and condensed milk into a pot. The ingredients were stirred together and then then put on the cooker for a few minutes (continue stirring during this). When it cooled down we rolled them into smaller bite size yummy treats.
Next we made lassi (an Indian smoothie) using plain yoghurt, milk and delicious mango. The ingredients were combined and blended and the children loved the result.
Chapatis were next and to do this we made a dough by mixing a little oil with flour and water. Pieces of the dough were rolled into circles and fried briefly in the pan for a tasty snack.
To round things off we watched a video of the Indian tabla drums being played and the children got to have a go themselves using our own nursery tabla drums.
What a yummy day learning about Diwali!
