Welcome to John Paul Class' page. This year, your child will be taught by Mr Troy. I am thrilled to be teaching year 2 this year! 

 

Homework is handed out on a Friday and should be back in school the following Wednesday. This will be set on Google Classroom.

 

Spellings will be given on a Friday and spellings tests take place the following Friday. Again, these will be on Google Classroom.

 

PE will take place on a Monday and on Wednesday. Please remember that your child needs to come dressed in their PE kits to school on this day. This includes suitable shoes.

Our Learning - Summer 2

SUMMER 2

This half term the Year 2 children will be learning all about gardens, plants, scents and colours in our topic The Scented Garden. We will be sewing sunflowers and bulbs, maintaining the school allotment and creating scented play-dough. 

 

In RE, our topic is Rules, Universal Treasures and Journey in Love. Children will be able to talk about their own experiences and ask questions about the treasures of our world. 

 

In Literacy, pupils will be inspired by 'The Magic Box by Kit Wright. This is a poem about about a all the wonderful and magic items, senses and actions that can be placed into the Magic Box. Children will perform the poem, innovate the poem and then write their own poem following a similar structure.  Pupils will then write a fiction story towards the end of the term. 

 

In Mathematics, pupils will be learning about time to 5-minute intervals. Please practice with your child by having them read the time at home or when out. We will then move on to measurement in mass, capacity and temperature. and how to count money and change

 

In Geography, pupils will carry out geographical fieldwork by counting wildflowers in Southwark Park and comparing it with flowers found in other parts of the world. 

 

In DT, this term we will be inspired by our senses. We will be making scented play dough from scratch and making our very own pizzas using ingredients that have been grown in the allotment. 

 

In Science, pupils will create their own scientific questions about plants, seeds and bulbs. We will measure the growth of a seed and bulb over the half-term and present our data in a pictogram, block graph and table.   

Our Learning - Summer 1

SUMMER 1

Thank you for your continued support. This half term the Year 2 children will be busy becoming STREET DETECTIVES!

 

In RE, our topic is Spread the Word and Rules. The pupils will discuss how messages are passed on in everyday life through verbal and digital communication. We will then relate this to the Good News which was passed on about Jesus having risen after his crucifixion.

  

In Literacy, the children will have the opportunity to write recounts, letters to the local council.

 

In Mathematics, the children will be learning about measurement in length and height. We will rulers to measure to the nearest centimetre and learn about measuring larger items in metres. After two weeks, we shall learn about position and direction in geometry. Pupils will use correct vocabulary to describe position, movement and turns.

 

In Computing, we will be learning about the internet and how to use search engines whilst staying safe online.  We will then be using technology to create different pieces of artwork.  Here are some examples of artwork we have created in the style of Impressionism, Pointillism and the work of Piet Mondrian:

 

In History, the pupils will be learning about events beyond living memory and about the lives of significant people. In particular, the pupils will be looking at the local history of the Mayflower which embarked from Rotherhithe. 

 

In Science, pupils will learn about living things & their habitats and Animals including humans. Will carry out observations in the park and investigations to focus their working scientifically skills.

 

In Art, pupils will learn about graffiti and how it is inspired through a variety of experiences. We will be looking closely at the work created by Jean-Michel Basquiat. 

 

Our Learning - Spring 2

SPRING 2

In RE our topic is Thanksgiving. We are going to be discussing the ceremony of Mass and how we as Catholics give our thanks to Jesus and God. We will then be moving onto Opportunities and realising that each day offers opportunities for good in preparation for Easter.

 

Firstly, I want to say a huge thank you to all the parents who have done such a wonderful job in ensuring their children have attended live lessons over the most recent lockdown. The attendance and effort pupils have put into their learning has been excellent!

This half term, the year 2 pupils will be making a mess and getting mucky with our new topic Muck, Mess & Mixture! In this topic, children will be learning all about how artists have used a variety of colours and materials for their creative ideas. Until the end of lockdown we are going to be delivering all of our lessons live using Google Classroom and other Google applications.

 

In Literacy, pupils will be focusing on fiction stories. We will be continuing with capital letters and full stops, working independently, and re-reading our work to check it makes sense and make any improvements. The pupil's writing will be reading Roald Dahl's book George's Marvellous Medicine which we will be acting out, innovating and inventing our ideas from. Pupils will be learning how to recognise and punctuate sentences with speech correctly. Please continue to support your child's reading and spelling.

 

Pupils will have reading lessons first thing in the morning where they will be asked comprehension questions and taught how to read using phonics.

 

In Mathematics, pupils will be taught how to identify and recognise 2D and 3D shapes using their features. They will then be taught fractions such as 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 3/4 and the equivalence of basic fractions such as 1/2 and 2/4. 

 

In addition to regular maths lessons, there will be maths fluency which is aimed at 'filling in the gaps' of mathematical knowledge that pupils may have developed over a disjointed academic year in lockdown. 

 

In DT and Art, pupils will be learning about different foods from around the world as well being able to mix and make a mess whilst making some sticky and sweet treats.

 

In Computing, pupils will be learning about questioning and binary trees. 

 

In Science, the children will be carrying out a variety of simple tests with more independence and learning about uses of everyday materials. 

 

In PE, Pupils will be taught invasion games. 

 

In PSHE, there will be a strong focus on wellbeing after the lockdown and getting to know one another again.

 

In Music, pupils will learn about reggae and animals

 

Our Learning - Spring 1

SPRING 1

In RE our topic is Books. We are going to be discussing the importance of the Holy Book and asking and answering questions about our life. We will then be moving onto thanksgiving and showing gratitude and appreciation for other people in our lives. 

 

This half term the Year 2 children will be exploring pirates and the open seas in our topic Land Ahoy! We will learn about the different parts of sailing ships and the interesting bunch who made up the crew. We are going to be delivering all of our lessons live using Google Classroom and other Google applications in anticipation of schools fully opening. 

 

In Literacy, the children will be focusing on story writing. We will be continuing with capital letters and full stops, working independently, and re-reading our work to check it makes sense and make any improvements. We will also learn how to organise information under subheadings and how to link ideas and sentences together using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Please continue to support your child's reading and spelling.

 

Pupils will have an additional reading skills lesson where they will be learning how to comprehend, infer meaning and understand a text. 

 

In Mathematics, the pupils will be looking at multiplication and division through a variety of problem solving and reasoning questions. We will then be looking at statistics and Geometry: properties of shapes.

 

In History, the pupils will be learning about events beyond living memory and about the lives of significant people. In particular, the pupils will be looking at the local history of the Mayflower which embarked from Rotherhithe. 

 

In Geography, the children will be utilising geographical skills, learning about maps and understanding the countries and seas which make up the UK and British Isles.

 

In DT and Art, pupils will be learning sketching techniques and creating observational drawings.

 

In Computing, pupils will be using and manipulating simple instructions in spreadsheets.

 

In Science, the children will be carrying out a variety of simple tests with more independence and learning about uses of everyday materials. 

 

Our Learning - Autumn 2

AUTUMN 2

In RE our topic is Sign and Symbols. We are going to look at the symbols of Baptism and think about how we can be like Jesus. We will then look at Judaism before moving onto the topic of Advent.

 

This half term the Year 2 children will be exploring towers, battlements and maybe a secret tunnel or two in our new topic Tower, Tunnels and Turrets! We'll learn all about the different parts of a castle and describe how they have changed over time.

 

In Literacy, the children will be focusing on diary entries. We will be continuing with capital letters and full stops, working independently, and re-reading our work to check it makes sense and make any improvements. We will also learn how to use powerful adjectives and adverbs to make our writing more interesting. We will read 'The Princess and the Pea' by Rachel Isadora. Please continue to support your child's reading and spelling.

 

We will also be focusing on preparing for our Phonics assessment this half term. To find out more about phonics and the new scheme the school is using, please click here.

 

In Mathematics, the children will be looking at addition and subtraction and learning new methods in order to answer more difficult questions. We will then move onto looking at money and working out different values and change.

 

In History, the pupils will be learning about events beyond living memory. In particular, we are learning about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot and discussing whether he was a villain or merely a political activist. 

 

In DT The pupils will be learning about which shapes are used when constructing a bridge. The pupils will then design and build their own bridge from lollipop stick and PVA glue.  .

 

In Computing, pupils will be taught about searching, sharing and using email safely online.

 

In Science, the children will be carrying out a variety of simple tests with more independence. They will be creating different types of bridges and discovering that engineers use triangular shapes to strengthen bridges. 

 

Autumn 2 - Year 2 -2021

  

Our Learning - Autumn 1

AUTUMN 1

This half term the Year 2 children will be exploring insects, bugs and minibeasts in our topic Wriggle & Crawl. We shall be going on bug hunts, observing minibeasts and be inspired by the places they inhabit. 

 

In RE our topic is Beginnings. We are going to look at the story of creation and understand that God created us and was there at our beginning. 

 

In Literacy, the children will have the opportunity to write recounts, focussing on their summer holidays and nonsense poems.

 

In Mathematics, the children will be looking at place value, learning about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and sorting problems including money, shape, measures and data handling.

 

In Geography, pupils will be focussing on map skills around Southwark Park and using a key to indicate where places of interest are

 

In Art, pupils learn to sketch minibeasts with recognisable and varied patterns and shapes.

 

In Computing, the children will be learning about coding and internet safety.

 

In Science, pupils will learn about living things & their habitats and Animals including humans. Will carry out observations in the park and investigations to focus their working scientifically skills.
